Which windstorm zone is my Corpus Christi house in?
Nueces County is split into three.
The state's published zone list puts Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, Aransas Pass and Portland in the inland I band at a 120 mph three-second gust under the older code tables, the farm communities west of the city line, including Robstown, Bishop and Driscoll, in inland II at 110 mph, and Port Aransas, Mustang Island and the island end of Corpus Christi in the seaward band at 130 mph.
Under the codes now adopted, the required speed is determined for the individual structure from its location rather than read off a flat zone number. We check the address before quoting.
What does a DP rating actually mean?
Design pressure is the uniform load, in pounds per square foot, that a window assembly was tested to withstand, positive and negative. It is measured on a specific size and configuration, and the structural test is run at one and a half times the rated pressure while water penetration is checked at a fraction of it.
The number belongs to that tested assembly. The same product line will publish a strong number at a modest size and a much weaker one at a large size, which is why a rating quoted without a size attached tells you almost nothing.
Do I need impact-rated glass, or will pressure-rated windows do?
They are separate tests and a window can pass one and not the other. Pressure rating is about load; impact rating is about a missile striking the glass and the assembly then surviving thousands of pressure cycles with the lite breached.
Whether impact protection is required depends on the wind speed at your address, since a location becomes a windborne debris region once its basic wind speed reaches 140 mph. In practice we usually recommend laminated glazing for the openings you cannot reach or would never board, and something cheaper elsewhere.
Is a window contractor licensed in Texas?
Texas does not issue a statewide licence for residential window and door contractors, so a contractor telling you they are state licensed for this trade is telling you something that does not exist. What is real is the building permit, the insurance certificate, and the manufacturer's evaluation report behind the unit being sold to you. Ask for all three.

Can you just replace the fogged glass instead of the whole window?
Usually yes, and it is a fraction of the cost. A fogged unit is a failed edge seal, and a new sealed unit set into a sound sash restores the opening completely.
The one caution specific to this coast is that if the window was certified with a particular glass build, substituting a different build changes the assembly that was tested. We will tell you when that applies to your unit and when it plainly does not, which is most of the time.
How long does a whole-house replacement take?
Measuring takes an afternoon. Manufacturing is the long pole: stock vinyl sizes run a few weeks, while laminated impact units, non-standard sizes and factory-finished clad wood run considerably longer, and we will give you the real lead time rather than the optimistic one. Installation is typically two to four days for a house of a dozen or so openings, done room by room so the building is never open overnight.
